JAM - Jazz Appreciation Month PDF Print E-mail
JAM! Don Seybold - Host of "Inside Jazz," WBAA
Thanks to the folks at the Smithsonian Institute, jazz now--like potatoes, strawberries, and bee keepers--has its own special month, April officially having been declared "Jazz Appreciation Month." And thanks mostly to the Herculean efforts of Brent Laidler, Lafayette now has its own local version of the celebration. Each Wednesday evening during April Brent gathered various local musicians at the Knickerbocker to play, jam, and demonstrate their talent and joy in playing this vibrant music. All the community had to do was show up and appreciate--no cover, no minimum, no hassle. Those who came were delighted with what they saw and heard. Unfortunately, the word did not get out to as many as could have also enjoyed and supported those welcome Wednesdays in the early spring. But it is the desire of all who participated and attended to make it this an annual celebration of jazz and our wonderfully talented local musicians. Hopefully, the 2009 appreciation will have even more appreciators in attendance since April is no longer "the cruelest month." Thanks to jazz, Brent, and our local players it is now the very "coolest" month.

JAM Sessions 2010
We started celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month with an Open JAM format, and it remains the most popular part of the month's celebrations.
Bring your instrument, your voice, your friends, and your love for music and sign up to perform with some of our area's best professionals... We have everyone from beginners to accomplished veterans and everyone has a great time! No one is there to judge and you won't find a more supportive group of people to work with.
It's all about the music!
Teaming with "Friends of Downtown" this year has greatly helped both our fundraising efforts and spreading the news. We look forward to having our greatest turn out ever.
Love Jazz but don't play? - All events are FREE - No Cover - You never know what can happen... We've found incredible new local talent every year. Watch as the magic happens.

Jazz Appreciation Month has been a roaring success. In three years of performances, more than a hundred area singers and instrumentalists participated, many came back and joined in again on successive nights. All expressed their disappointment when the celebration ended and their desire to have it continue.

The audiences grew larger and larger with each year, the feedback on the event has been most encouraging. Decisions have already been made to make JAM an annual event - even expanding the all ages venue where high school and younger college musicians can participate.
The Jazz Bands at the Lafayette Theater this year were great!

Thank you to clinicians and performers - Tim Miller, Don Nichols, Judd Danby, Jamie Newman, Scott Pazera, Danny Weiss, and Mo Trout.

We want to thank the Knickerbocker for hosting the events - please keep those nights open for us in 2011!
Thanks everyone!
Brent
